How to Throw the Cutest Backyard Oktoberfest

Every fall we turn our backyard into a little biergarten, and this year we called it the Metzenhaus. It's one of our favorite traditions, and I'm sharing everything we did so you can throw your own: the decor, the food, the drinks, and the games. Most of it was easy and inexpensive, and every link you need is right here.

Step One: The Decor

Use what you already have. We used our seasonal mums as our decor and created stations throughout the yard. They anchor each table and cost nothing extra.

The biergarten banner. We used an Amazon table runner to create a long biergarten banner. It was an inexpensive touch that went a long way. Shop the decor links here.

The Walgreens banner hack. We made multiple banners around the yard, including our "Welcome to the Metzenhaus" sign, and hung them with yard stakes from Home Depot. Grab the Canva template here.

Desserts that double as decor. Our dessert table always does double duty. This year it featured a German chocolate cake and an elegant Bavarian coquette cake.

Thrifted and foraged. We elevated the food table with thrifted baskets, hung banners, and foraged wildflowers for an inexpensive yet authentic touch.

Step Two: The Food

The mains: brats, hot dogs, and sliders on King's Hawaiian rolls.

The grazing board: four cheese blocks, salami, hummus, dried mango, pickles, and sauerkraut. We added grapes and apples, which not only looked amazing but were also great on the budget.

The favorite: soft, warm pretzels with my mom's homemade beer cheese.

Family recipes made it special: German potato salad and German chocolate cake from my mother-in-law.

Grocery List

  • Brats, hot dogs, and slider patties
  • King's Hawaiian rolls, buns, and sliced cheese
  • Cheese blocks, salami, hummus, and crackers
  • Dried mango, pickles, and sauerkraut
  • Soft pretzels, mustard, ketchup, and jam
  • Fresh fruit (grapes and apples)
  • Frozen pizzas for late night

Step Three: The Drinks

The best party trick: splurging on a mobile bar from Mobile Mingle. I could actually enjoy the party while they kept our guests hydrated, and they even made dirty sodas for the kids!

The beer: you can't have an Oktoberfest without our friends at Schell's Brewery.

Step Four: The Fun

  • A bounce house for the kids.
  • A kids' coloring table to keep little hands busy. PSA: don't forget the coloring sheets!
  • Bags, Hammerschlagen, and some ping pong for everyone else.

Cheers to Our Sponsors

A huge thank you to Schell's Brewery and Mobile Mingle Bev for helping make our Oktoberfest so special. Prost!
